Buzan Study Method: What is it? & My Comments

BUZAN STUDY METHOD
What is it and How it works?
(1) It is divided into:-
Preparation
- The Browse - Browse through material you are going to study
- Time and Amount – Decide on periods of study time you have and what you will cover in each period.
- Five Minute Mind Map Jotter – Jot down everything you know about the subject to get your brain primed – 5 mins max
- Ask Questions and Define Goals – what do you want to get from the book.
Application
- Overview – Don’t start at page 1 – approach it like you would a jigsaw puzzle – find edges, corners and fill in bits as you go
- Preview – skim read the text first to discover the core elements
- Inview – Fill in those areas left – difficult areas or areas where knowledge is not complete.
- Review – reconsider those sections you marked as noteworthy – less han 70% will actually be used. Cover any further information to achieve your goals.
What is my Experience and Comments?
I was using this method before I read it. I can say that about 80% of the principles of this method are the same as the method I used while I am reading. I am doing this just intuitively, or maybe my mind tells me that this is a logical and easiest way to read.
I used this method, scientifically, for the homework purpose, and used all principles it tells me to follow step by step. My experience was not surprising, because this was not a new thing to me so that I could not discover big differences.
Anyway, I experienced some more effectiveness in my understanding, reading time and overall performance on my recalling and learning mechanism.
Listed below are my positive observations when I applied this method to read texts/text books:
   ·         Reduces fear, because I know that how long it takes to read and how hard that is. This makes me relax because I know what I am going to face as I turned the pages.
·         Saves time, because I plan my time for each section and use wisely.
·         Increase my understanding by reviewing, digesting information during breaks and then resetting my mind for the next section.
·         Organizes my reading and studying so that I get rid of the risk to be stocked in front of the book by looking into the vast. Planning makes everything easier, by organizing and planning my time and defining what to do during each period lead me to follow these.
·         Courageous me, if I see some graphs, charts etc. on the pages I have to read during the preview session. Everything other than sentences on the pages reduces the essay part of the context, and psychologically this makes me happy.
·         Keeps my memory fresh.
·         Protects my memory against information overload and save sit being information garbage.
·          Increases the percentage of my understanding the text I read. I recall more. Instead of memorizing and then forgetting something, with this method, I make an index in my mind for the information I learned from my reading and keep the most important part fresh.
Listed below is my negative opinion when I applied this method to read texts/text books:
·         Especially when I applied this method to numeric and formula based texts, omitting the sections that I could not understand and coming back later to read again will not work. Because in some books as I mentioned, if I omit one section, I can not understand the rest because everything is based on the reading I have already finished.
